Las elegidas / The Chosen Ones by David Pablos (pictured left) was the top winner at the 58th edition of the Ariel Awards presented by the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences, winning in five categories of the 13 for which it was nominated, including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Script, Best Cinematography, and Best Breakthrough Actress.

Gloria, the biopic of Mexican pop star Gloria Trevi by Swiss-born Christian Keller also won five Ariels—out of 14 nominations—including the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress for its protagonists Marco Pérez and Sofía Espinosa.

The Ariel for Best First Film was presented to 600 millas / 600 Miles by Gabriel Ripstein (pictured below right), while Trisha Ziff’s El hombre que vio demasiado / The Man Who Saw Too Much won the Ariel for Best Documentary.

Other awards included Best Adapted Screenplay to Laura Santullo for her work on Un monstruo de mil cabezas / A Monster With a Thousand Heads, and Best Ibero-American film for the Colombian film El abrazo de la serpiente / Embrace of the Serpent.

Mexican gángster: La leyenda del charro misterioso won four Ariels in the technical categories (out of eight nominations), while Celso García’s La delgada línea amarilla / The Thin Yellow Line went home empty-handed as it failed to win in any of the 14 categories for which it was nominated.

The Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences presented the Golden Ariel Award to Argentinean-born actress Rosita Quintana, who acted in numerous films of Mexican Cinema’s Golden Age including Susana by Luis Buñuel, and to filmmaker Paul Leduc, who directed Reed, México insurgente (1973), and Frida, naturaleza muerta / Frida, Still Life (1984).

The ceremony of the 58th Ariel Awards took place last night in Mexico City.
